{"id":397,"date":"2025-01-29T09:58:47","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T09:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/venepuncture-and-cannulation\/"},"modified":"2025-07-03T09:54:42","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T08:54:42","slug":"venepuncture-and-cannulation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/registered-nurses-odp\/rn-clinical-skills\/venepuncture-and-cannulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Venepuncture and Cannulation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This education programme has been designed to prepare registered health care professionals in venepuncture and\/or peripheral venous cannulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>non<\/strong>-registered staff please see <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/health-care-support-workers\/clinical-skills\/\">Clinical Skills \u2013 Clinical Education Team<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Staff will be required to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete a pre-course workbook and quiz prior to undertaking the training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify a Registered Nurse mentor who has completed the training and is competent to enable them to meet course competency requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intended Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Registered Nurse, Midwives, Health Visitor, Radiographer &amp; Theatre Practitioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon completion of this programme the practitioner will be able to demonstrate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowledge of venous, arterial, and nervous anatomy &amp; physiology of the upper\/lower arm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rationale for site selection for venepuncture &amp;\/or PVC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appropriate knowledge of aseptic non touch technique (ANTT) throughout procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding of laboratory requirements for routine blood sampling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awareness of patient risk factors that increase difficulty of procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowledge of complications, and outline actions to reduce risk, or deal with complications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Importance of gaining patient consent for procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding of NHS Lothian Policies in relation to the procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empathy for patient comfort, and dignity throughout the procedure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current knowledge of venepuncture &amp;\/or PVC to enable the practitioner to achieve competence in performing these skills with an awareness of professional accountability and responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information contact <a href=\"mailto:loth.clinicalskillstraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk\">loth.clinicalskillstraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This education programme has been designed to prepare registered health care professionals in venepuncture and\/or peripheral venous cannulation.
