{"id":427,"date":"2025-01-29T09:58:48","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T09:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/scottish-routine-examination-of-newborn\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T08:32:19","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T07:32:19","slug":"scottish-routine-examination-of-newborn","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/registered-midwives\/scottish-routine-examination-of-newborn\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish Routine Examination of Newborn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This course is designed and delivered jointly between NHS Lothian and the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme (SMMDP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of this course is for registered midwives to complete additional training to facilitate the Routine Examination of the Newborn.&nbsp; This examination is a screening tool and requires more in depth knowledge on examining the eyes, heart, hips and testes of newborns..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This skill has recently been added to the NMC midwifery standards and is now a component of the undergraduate course for student midwives.&nbsp; Midwives have a responsibility to support student midwives with their training in this skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Target Staff Group<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Registered midwives working in all areas within NHS Lothian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning outcomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Demonstrate a complete simulated routine examination of the newborn, including initial assessment of perinatal history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice, within simulated environment, the systematic examination and the additional components required, including cardiac auscultation, fundal examination with ophthalmoscope, physical examination of hips and, in males, palpation of scrotum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate awareness of referral pathways and communication with parents if positive screens occur, or if any suspected deviations from normal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Training consists of three key stages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre Course<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Textbook provided by SMMDP<br>Pre-Course MCQ test<br>Annotated presentations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This typically takes 30 hours<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In person Study days<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Two 7.5 hour study days<br>Lectures with expert speakers<br>Skill stations<br>Post Course MCQ<br>OSCE style assessment of the full systematic examination<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post course<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Minimum of 15 observed examinations in practice<br>3 sign off examination (final completed by faculty REN Midwives or senior neonatal staff)<br>Submission of paperwork to SMMDP for indexing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information contact <a href=\"mailto:loth.clinicalskillstraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk\">loth.clinicalskillstraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This course is designed and delivered jointly between NHS Lothian and the Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme (SMMDP).
