The course focuses on key issues in acutely unwell \/ deteriorating patients in a REAS setting.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/02\/8097.jpg\" alt=\"Health care working holding medical watch displaying the time at 13:30.\" class=\"wp-image-816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/02\/8097.jpg 480w, https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/cet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/02\/8097-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intended Audience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Royal Edinburgh Hospital<\/strong>-based Registered Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers who are&nbsp;<strong>competent in vital signs observation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pathway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We recommend attending this course&nbsp;<strong>within the first six months in REAS<\/strong>, followed by the comprehensive 2-day \u2018Deteriorating Adult Patient Course for Registered Nurses\u2019 or \u2018Recognise and Respond Course for HCSWs\u2019 within the first two years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Outcomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ability to\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct correct NEWS2 scoring \u2013 paper chart \/ NEWS on Trak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss principles of ABCDE assessment and management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify causes and risk factors for deterioration most frequently seen in the REAS setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply assessment techniques and tools for the detection and management of the deteriorating patient in the clinical context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognise how and when to escalate (trends and acute deterioration)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss when and whom to report and escalate to in the context of \u2018soft signs\u2019, trends and acute deterioration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Demonstrate self-awareness of individual learning needs to support safe delivery of care for the deteriorating patient<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This course is available for REH staff only<\/strong>, is delivered face to face in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and will be booked through eESS (and can also be booked directly with REAS Clinical Educators).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:loth.clinicalskillstraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk\">loth.clinicalskillstraining@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk<\/a>&nbsp;or the REAS Clinical Educators.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This interactive half-day Deteriorating Adult Patient Course is designed to provide knowledge and skills for identifying, assessing, managing, and escalating appropriately.
