{"id":378,"date":"2024-02-27T10:23:13","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T10:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/ehre\/disability\/"},"modified":"2024-02-27T15:02:02","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T15:02:02","slug":"disability","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/staff.nhslothian.scot\/ehre\/disability\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When we talk about disability, we mean a physical or mental impairment that has a \u2018substantial\u2019 and \u2018long-term\u2019 negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">People\u2019s experiences of discrimination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People are sometimes treated unfairly because of something to do with their disability. We must make reasonable adjustments to remove barriers so that disabled people can access services and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of disability discrimination may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Holding services or clinics in inaccessible building &#8211; e.g. with no lifts or accessible toilets, no hearing loop systems or poor signage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not providing information needed to make informed decisions about a person\u2019s treatment or care in a suitable format \u2013 e.g. not providing large print, plain English or Easy Read, or sign language interpreters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treating a disabled member of staff unfavourably such as giving them a warning because they have been absent from work a lot if the absence is because they needed to attend hospital appointments related to their disability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Equality Act 2010\u00a0<\/strong>protects people against direct discrimination or harassment due to their caring responsibilities.\u00a0 Because carers are \u2018associated\u2019 with someone who is protected by the law because of their age or disability, they are also thereby protected by the Equality Act.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful links:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/inclusionscotland.org\/get-informed\/social-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Social Model of Disability &#8211; Inclusion Scotland<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/inequality\/2017\/nov\/15\/whats-life-really-like-for-disabled-peopld-disability-diaries-reveal-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What is life really like for disabled people?
