Adult Bladder Dysfunction for Registered Nurses
For all registered nurses in the community or hospital setting
This training session will give an overview of bladder dysfunction and subsequent assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management options.
Pre-course reading:
- NHS Lothian Bladder and Bowel Nursing Team intranet site sections – BASICS; Bladder Dysfunction; Community Nursing Assessments.
- BASICS – bladder diary; a physical exam; symptom profile; infection; constipation; scan.
- Bladder Dysfunction – national guidelines; assessment guidelines (tools); types of bladder dysfunction; urine samples; bladder scanning; treatment.
Course content:
Presentation covering learning objectives; anatomy and physiology; factors affecting bladder dysfunction; assessment process; treatment and management options.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system.
- Understand the emotional and social impact of bladder dysfunction.
- Identify types of bladder dysfunction and reasons for further investigations.
- Understand the process of accessing bladder dysfunction.
- Describe treatment options in relation to the different types of bladder dysfunction.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the ability to plan appropriate care and implement interventions.
Adult Bowel Dysfunction for Registered Nurses & Band 4 APs
For all registered nurses (including Band 4 APs) in the community, care home or hospital setting
This training session will give an overview of bowel dysfunction and subsequent assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management options.

Course content:
Presentations covering learning objectives; anatomy and physiology; types of bowel dysfunction; assessment process; treatment and management options.
Objectives:
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the large bowel.
- Understand the process of assessing bowel dysfunction.
- Identify types of bowel dysfunction.
- Describe treatment and/or management options as appropriate.
- Discuss digital rectal examination; digital removal of faeces; digital rectal stimulation; bowel irrigation and legal issues.
- Be aware of products to help and manage bowel dysfunction if appropriate.
- Understand onward referral process.
Adult Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction for non registered nursing staff
For all non registered nursing staff who work in the community or hospital setting
This training session will give an overview of bladder and bowel dysfunction, the assessment process plus treatment and management options.

Adult Bowel Management for Band 3 Community HCSW
For all Band 3 healthcare support workers in the community setting
This training session will give an overview of bowel function and dysfunction, assessment, treatment and management options.
Course content:
Presentation covering learning objectives; anatomy and physiology; normal bowel function; types of bowel dysfunction; assessment; treatment and management options.
Objectives:
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the large bowel.
- Have an understanding of the process of assessment.
- Have knowledge of types of bowel dysfunction.
- Have knowledge of treatment and/or management options.
- Discuss digital rectal examination and administration of suppositories/micro enemas.
- Be aware of products to help and manage bowel dysfunction if appropriate.
- Awareness of legal issues.
- Understand limitations of role and processes to report to registered nurse.
