Case Study 2: Clinical/Service-Based Role

Sarah – Community Nurse

Sarah is on maternity leave but is keen to keep her skills fresh and maintain her NMC requirements. She arranges five KIT days spaced out over three months. 

KIT Day 1 – Mandatory training 

Sarah completes moving-and-handling, infection control and fire safety training. Her manager schedules all sessions for one morning to make it easier for her. 

KIT Day 2 – Service update session 

Sarah attends a team huddle and meets new staff. She also gets briefed on changes to rotas, community pathways, and documentation updates. 

KIT Day 3 – Shadow shift (no patient caseload – observational only) 

Sarah shadows a colleague for a short shift to observe updates to clinical practice. She doesn’t hold responsibility for patients — this is purely observational. 

KIT Day 4 – Revalidation preparation 

Sarah uses a KIT Day to complete reflective accounts and professional reading, supported by her manager.  

KIT Day 5 – Return-to-work planning 

Sarah meets her manager to discuss her phased return, flexible working request and any adjustments needed. 

Outcome: 
Sarah feels supported and prepared. The KIT days helped her maintain her professional confidence and reconnect with her team before returning.
