This course is a virtual training course which requires completion of clinical work based competencies.
Staff will be required to:
- complete a pre-course quiz prior to undertaking the training.
- identify a Registered Nurse mentor who has completed bladder scanning training and is competent in use of the model of bladder scanner used in their ward/ department to enable them to meet course competency requirements.
Intended Audience
This study day is for NHS Lothian Registered Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers, Band 3 and above.
Learning Outcomes
This course provides information on various models of portable bladder scanners used in NHS Lothian.
- Knowledge of acute and chronic incomplete bladder emptying, symptoms, causes and contributory factors.
- Knowledge of indications for performing a bladder scan
- Knowledge of what can give false readings and measures to be taken to avoid this happening.
- Knowledge of how to use bladder scanner in order to obtain an accurate measurement of post void residual urine volume.
