Healthcare Support Worker Deteriorating Patient Education

Recognise and Respond

Recognise and Respond is an interactive half-day course for Healthcare Support Workers in primary and secondary care in NHS Lothian, particularly in acute settings. This course focuses on the structured A-E approach, NEWS2 and SBAR-D to identify, report/escalate, and support the management of a deteriorating patient, with emphasis on effective teamwork and communication.

Intended Audience

Healthcare support workers in acute adult areas across various sites

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to recognise and respond to the deteriorating adult patient in acute clinical areas
  • Perform a robust A-E assessment and discuss appropriate interventions and escalation
  • Calculate an accurate NEWS2 and rationalise interventions and escalation
  • Apply the SBAR-D communication tool to various scenarios
  • Consolidate prior knowledge about the importance of fluid balance
