More and more we find other services that are using anti-cancer therapies to treat patients with other diseases, most often auto-immune based conditions. Anti-cancer therapies can produce an immunosuppressive state in patients that can regulate the auto-immune condition.
This means that staff need to be trained to deliver these drugs safely and can do so by attending the RIE SACT training days.
This course will empower nurses who work in areas that do not regularly deliver SACT (systemic anti-cancer treatment). It is aimed at areas that use SACT for other indications beyond cancer such as vasculitis, MS and other autoimmune conditions. The course is face to face and will run from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh site.
Target group: Registered nurses looking to administer: * IV Cytotoxic therapy * IV Immunotherapy and monoclonal antibodies * Oral Cytotoxic therapy * SC and IM therapy in non-cancer areas.
The learning outcomes for the course are as follows.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to-
- Discuss the indications for using SACT in your clinical areas
- Understand the mechanisms of action of commonly used drugs
- Manage a cytotoxic spill
- Manage common side effects, both on the day and later
- Deliver the drugs in a safe and effective manner
The staff will then need to achieve a competency in this skill.
