Ear Irrigation

This course is delivered in person whereby completion of the course requires completion of clinical competencies.

Staff will be required to:

•            complete a pre-course workbook prior to the practical training

•            identify a Registered Nurse mentor who has completed ear irrigation training and is competent in use of the model of irrigator used in their ward/ department to enable them to meet course competency requirements.

Intended Audience

This study day is for NHS Lothian Registered Nurses.

Learning Outcomes

This education programme has been designed to prepare registered health care professionals to competently carry out the procedure of ear irrigation. On completion they will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship of professional accountability to ear irrigation.
  • Outline the basic anatomy of the ear.
  • Describe common ear problems and the contraindications/cautions to irrigation.
  • Obtain a relevant history and perform an ear examination.
  • Discuss the complications of ear irrigation, and the prevention or management of these.
  • Explain the maintenance of equipment in relation to infection control and health and safety.
