Core immunisation training covers face-to-face immunisation theory and practical sessions to enable safe vaccine administration. Separate sessions are available for registered and non-registered (HCSW) healthcare workers.
Intended Audience
Registered or non-registered practitioners who are new to vaccinating or who have not attended this session.
Learning Outcomes
The aim of this training is to meet NHS Education Scotland (NES) National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training by preparing registered or non-registered practitioners to undertake all aspects of vaccination and immunisation within their job role.
Health protection Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland recommend that all healthcare professional involved in immunisation should be able to demonstrate competence, current evidence-based knowledge and understanding of the areas listed below:
- The aims of immunisation: national policy and schedules
- The immune system and how vaccines work
- Vaccine preventable diseases
- Different types of vaccines used & their composition
- Current issues and controversies regarding immunisation
- Communicating with parents and patients
- Legal aspects of vaccination
- Storage and handling of vaccines
- Correct administration of vaccines
- Anaphylaxis and other adverse events
- Documentation, record keeping and reporting
- Strategies for improving immunisation rates.
