This course addresses the care of the perioperative patient, including roles and responsibilities of the scrub/circulating practitioner, related policies, consent and capacity, patient safety, human factors, never events, decontamination and sterilisation of equipment and environment.
Six study days delivered Face-to-Face OR via Microsoft Teams (08.45 -16:30hrs).
Please be aware the days will be a mixture of Face-to-Face, live virtual sessions and independent study activities.
Clinical Educator virtual meetings are available to all participants to lend additional support. In addition to these study days, participants are required to complete work-based learning and independent study.
This course is assessed by the completion of clinical competencies and reflective accounts related to theoretical subjects delivered. Assessment/supervision from an experienced scrub practitioner in own clinical area.

Intended Audience
Suitable for recently appointed band 5 perioperative practitioners – adult or paediatric registered nurses working in the scrub and circulating role.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Reflect on non-technical skills, including communication skills, professionalism and accountability, related to your practice.
- Debate a range of responses to a perioperative Never Event.
- Demonstrate effective leadership of the small perioperative team.
Appraise a plan of action for the deteriorating patient within the perioperative setting.
