Obstetrics HDU

This course offers senior midwives the opportunity to enhance their skillset and further their knowledge of caring for unwell women in the high dependency environment.

Target staff group

Midwives currently working in Labour ward/ Obstetric HDU

Pre-requisites

  • Experienced band 6 registered midwife credential
  • Minimum 8 months labour ward experience as a band 6 midwife
  • Team leader & line manager approval to attend course & fulfil follow-on requirements
  • Trust mandatory training up-to-date
  • Basic life support (BLS) updated
  • IV cannulation/ IV medicines management competency completed

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise a deterioration in a patient and apply a systematic assessment using an A+E assessment.
  • Increase knowledge of obstetric and non-obstetric conditions that may require HDU maternity care.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the midwives role in caring for invasive lines.
  • Build on knowledge of escalation and discuss suitable NHS Lothian referral pathways and assessment tools which would benefit women who receive HDU care.
