This interactive half-day Deteriorating Adult Patient Course is designed to provide knowledge and skills for identifying, assessing, managing, and escalating appropriately. The course focuses on key issues in acutely unwell / deteriorating patients in a REAS setting.

Intended Audience
Royal Edinburgh Hospital-based Registered Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers who are competent in vital signs observation.
Pathway
- We recommend attending this course within the first six months in REAS, followed by the comprehensive 2-day ‘Deteriorating Adult Patient Course for Registered Nurses’ or ‘Recognise and Respond Course for HCSWs’ within the first two years
Learning Outcomes
Ability to…
- Conduct correct NEWS2 scoring – paper chart / NEWS on Trak
- Discuss principles of ABCDE assessment and management
- Identify causes and risk factors for deterioration most frequently seen in the REAS setting
- Apply assessment techniques and tools for the detection and management of the deteriorating patient in the clinical context
- Recognise how and when to escalate (trends and acute deterioration)
- Discuss when and whom to report and escalate to in the context of ‘soft signs’, trends and acute deterioration
Demonstrate self-awareness of individual learning needs to support safe delivery of care for the deteriorating patient
This course is available for REH staff only, is delivered face to face in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and will be booked through eESS (and can also be booked directly with REAS Clinical Educators).
