POSA is the foundation course for Cancer nurses who will be administering SACT which is Systemic Anti- Cancer Treatment. This course will provide training in the principles of SACT safe administration, how to deliver SACT through different routes and how to manage any issues that may arise during treatment. It will also explore the pharmacological basis of SACT, issues around immunotherapy toxicity and the psychological well-being of patients undergoing treatment.
The learning outcomes for the course is as follows.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
• Discuss cancer development and risk factors
• Deliver-
• * IV Cytotoxic therapy
• * IV Immunotherapy and monoclonal antibodies
• * Oral Cytotoxic therapy
• * SC and IM therapy
- Manage common SACT emergencies such as hypersensitivity reactions or extravasation.
- Prepare patients for discharge following treatment.
- Support patients with their emotional and spiritual wellbeing whilst undergoing treatment.
To evidence the learning, participants are expected to achieve competence in three routes of SACT delivery- Oral, Injection and IV Infusion, as well as completing the UKONS SACT Passport which evidences the learning obtained both on the course and as self-directed learning following the study days.
