Students undertaking this module will develop and apply knowledge in patient history taking and clinical examination skills to identify deterioration as well as promote health and wellbeing.
Pre-requisites
- Role within primary or secondary care (adult and/or paediatric) which require development of clinical competence in person centred clinical assessment and clinical decision making.
- Support from line manager to participate in learning activities and complete formative and summative assessments. Assigned practice assessor to support clinical learning and assess clinical competencies.
This is a collaborative module, accredited by Queen Margaret University at SQCF level 10 for 40 credits.
Learning outcomes
- Apply knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology to systematic history taking and clinical examination.
- Apply a wide range of evidence-based knowledge to undertake competent systematic history taking and clinical examination assessment of persons.
- Formulate and demonstrate clinical judgement and decision-making competence to safely manage and/or appropriately escalate and refer persons.
- Critically analyse and utilise a range of strategies that will optimise the management of physical health and psychological needs.
- Analyse and promote person centred decision making and care planning considering a multi-professional approach.
The learning outcomes will be assessed by the following assessments
- Completion of student-centred learning agreement and completion of agreed clinical competencies. This will assess learning outcomes 1,2,3,4,5. (Pass/Fail only).
- A 2000-word assignment critically analysing person-centred decision making considering an episode of care. This will assess learning outcome 4 and 5 and must achieve 40% to pass. (50% of the total module mark).
- Virtual VIVA: Students will undertake a virtual VIVA comprised of 3 questions focusing on clinical assessment and decision making. This will assess learning outcomes 1,2,3 and will be marked using a weighted global rating scale. Students must achieve a minimum of competent in all domains to achieve a 40% pass (50% of the final mark).
Students and their managers will select clinical competencies appropriate to their clinical service requirements. There are core competencies which must be undertaken by all staff and the option of additional competencies as required by the clinical service.
How to Apply
The module runs twice a year, September and January. To apply, an application form must be completed and submitted by a supporting line manager. Applications open early spring for September cohort and late autumn for January cohort.
