Perioperative Course

Perioperative HCSW Level 8 Band 3 Development
Assistant Perioperative Practice Course
2 Units from Group Award – Professional Development Award in Perioperative Practice.

This 6-month course runs in collaboration with NHSL and West Lothian College once a year. Classroom teaching is one 7-hour day per week, day release from service, shared equally between NHSL and WLC.
The candidates are enrolled with WLC and supported by an NHSL educator and a college-based educator from West Lothian College.

Candidate/student completion expected six months.

Core Units

  • Intraoperative Care – H8X2, 2 SQA credits at SCQF level 8 (2 credits)
  • Understanding Personal & Professional Development – HF2A, 1 SQA credit at SCQF level 7 (1 credit)

Candidates/students undertaking this course will undertake 2 of the core units which is 3 credits
To evidence the course outcomes, the candidate/student must complete various assessment methods including 2 Practice Learning Experience placements across site, portfolio of evidence, questions, reflective accounts, case study, clinical competency booklet and clinical attendance record.

The college-based educator will induct the candidate on to the course and provide the candidate/student with access to an electronic portfolio.

The NHSL and WLC educators liaise with the student to monitor progress, assess, and mark the candidate/student’s work against the SVQ units.

There will be an expectation that staff participating in the course will be supervised/ mentored in practice and that work based competences will be area specific and existing competences can be utilised with the course providing the underpinning knowledge.
