Central Vascular Access Device

The Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD) course is delivered in person at a local education centre. All healthcare workers will also receive pre-course learning prior to the study day.

The study day covers theory and training for central venous device access, maintenance, and care.

Devices covered are:

  • Central Venous Catheters
  • Skin-tunnelled Central Venous Catheters
  • PICC lines
  • Totally Implanted Vascular Access Devices

Prior to the study day, Candidates should have undertaken an Intravenous Therapy and Infusion device programme and competencies. Pre-course material is also available on the NHSL intranet.

Intended Audience

NHS Lothian Registered adult Nurses, District Nurse and Allied health professionals.

Midlines

Staff will be guided and supported through relevant knowledge and simulated clinical skills so that they can safely and effectively care for patients with midlines.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply appropriate anatomy and physiology to understand the placing of midlines.
  • Provide a rationale for use of midlines over alternatives.
  • Determine which medications are appropriate for use with midlines and which are contra-indicated.
  • Care for and maintain the midline, stabilisation device, needle-free device and dressing.
  • Safely remove a midline as per NHSL CVAD guidelines.
