Enteral Feeding

This full day course has been developed for registered nurses who require to enhance or acquire the knowledge and skills of enteral tube feeding so to safely pass a fine bore nasogastric tube and competently replace a gastrostomy tube. The full day course involves theory and practical workshops on Ng insertion and management of ostomies.

Completion of the course requires completion of an NHSL work based clinical competency.

Please note that adult and paediatric courses are two separate courses.

Intended Audience

NHS Lothian Registered nurses working in hospital and community settings.

Aim:

To enable the Registered Nurse to provide care to patients who are receiving enteral tube feeding and to undertake the procedures of inserting +/- managing a fine bore nasogastric tube and confirming correct position or replacing balloon gastrostomy tubes using best practice within the agreed NHS Lothian policy, protocols and procedures.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify the indications for enteral tube feeding.
  • Recognise potential complications of enteral tube feeding and how to prevent or treat.
  • Describe the procedure for managing and confirming position of nasogastric (NG) tube, inserting a NG tube, and replacing a balloon gastrostomy.
  • Apply this knowledge to undertake insertion and or management of NG tubes and/or replacement of balloon gastrostomies.
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system.
  • Discuss the administration of medicines via the enteral tube route.
