Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy

Description

This study day is delivered in person at a hospital site. The day consists of tutorials led by a clinical educator and expert members of the speech and language team (SALT) and critical care physiotherapy team. The day also involves practical demonstrations and workshops covering the care and emergency management of patients with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy.

Pre- reading materials will be offered to staff on virtual platforms one week prior to the study day.

Intended Audience

NHS Lothian Registered Nurses and community-based healthcare support workers.

Learning outcomes

  • To gain an understanding of the differences between the two types of altered airway: tracheostomy and laryngectomy.
  • To understand the nursing care required by patients with either a tracheostomy or laryngectomy and the local escalation policy.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the management of emergency airway situations with patients with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy, achieved through practice-based scenarios.
