NES Anaesthetic Practitioner Framework

Aim

The programme is based on five general Core Competencies, with 3 additional appendices. The general competencies are core to this programme. To practice independently the AP must achieve the clinical and knowledge skills contained within the 5 general competencies. On completion of this AP programme the RN will have the recognised skills, knowledge, attitudes and technical expertise to undertake an anaesthetic practitioner role within the perioperative environment.

Content

Pre-operative preparation of the environment, Pre-operative preparation of the patient, Peri-operative care of the patient, Post-operative care of the patient & Emergency care and treatment. Appendices – Anaesthesia in remote and isolated areas, Anaesthesia in obstetrics & Anaesthesia in paediatrics. Knowledge and skills will be gained in a 9-month timeframe, across a variety of Practice Learning Experience placements within NHSL anaesthetics, theatres and recovery. Set study days will underpin development and learners are required to submit a completed framework document with supporting evidence. On successful completion, certification is provided by NHS Lothian Clinical Education and Training Department.

Target Audience

The programme is particularly aimed at RN’s with an interest and desire to work within the anaesthetic area. RNs must have completed induction/flying start /newly qualified programme and be currently working in the perioperative environment or an area with transferable skills. Manager support is required via supporting statement.

Start Date: 21st August 2024

Practice Learning Experience placements will be across sites and Framework study days will be delivered in blended format – Microsoft Teams, directed self-learning and some face to face.
