Age

When we talk about age, we mean how old someone is or the age group they are in.

This can mean people of the same age or of a range of ages, for example people ‘over 60’ or ‘under 18s’, ‘mid-20s’ or ‘people born in 1952.’ Age groups can also be relative, for example people ‘older than me’ or ‘younger than us.’

People’s experiences of discrimination

People are sometimes treated unfairly because of something to do with their age, or the age group they are in.

Examples of age discrimination may include:

  • Asking someone’s age at a job interview when it’s not relevant.
  • Assuming older people cannot use technology.
  • Telling someone they will grow out of it or they’re having a ‘senior’ moment.
