Pregnancy and Maternity

When we talk about pregnancy and maternity, we mean when someone is, or has been pregnant, has given birth or is breastfeeding.

People’s experiences of discrimination

People are sometimes treated unfairly because they are pregnant, have been pregnant, have given birth recently or because they are breastfeeding.

Examples of pregnancy and maternity discrimination may include:

  • Asking a woman to stop breastfeeding or to go to a private space to breastfeed.
  • Forgetting to invite a female member of staff who is on maternity leave to attend a staff learning and development away day.
