Your eligibility for benefits depends on how much money you have coming into your household and how much (if any) you have in savings.
Always check that when you are looking at information on benefits that what you are reading relates to Scotland – some benefits reflect the Scottish Benefits system and others are UK wide.
Child Winter Heating Assistance. A payment made once a year to parents and carers to help those with disabled children. This is paid automatically if you’re in receipt of a qualifying benefit. The payment for winter 2022-2023 is £214.10
Low Income Winter Heating Assistance (replaces the Cold Weather Payment). If you qualify you could get £50 once a year to help with your energy bills in winter. This will start in February 2023.
You’ll get this payment automatically if you qualify. You could qualify if you get certain benefits, like:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
Money to help pay energy bills. £150 Cost of Living Award (council tax rebate) to help pay your bills. Most households got this award as credit to their council tax accounts in April 2022.
Warm Home Discount. You can get £150 off your electricity bill if you qualify for the Warm Home Discount scheme. To get it you need to either:
- get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
- be on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria.
The scheme opens each year in September or October and runs until the end of March the following year.
Winter Fuel Payment. You could get between £100 and £300 to help pay your energy bills. This is tax free. To get the payment, you need to be born on or before 25 September 1956.
