There are a number of organisations that will provide hardship grants to staff who find themselves in unanticipated financial difficulty for a number of different reasons. It is important to check the eligibility criteria for the grant. Most grants are means tested i.e. they are dependent on how much money you earn and how much you have in savings. For some you don’t have to be member of the organisation – former members and the dependents of deceased members can also apply as can their children who are still in full time education or training for a profession.
It is also worth checking whether a partner or spouse is eligible for a hardship grant (e.g. police benevolent fund) – even if you are not eligible yourself.
In addition it is always worth checking that you are getting all the benefits that you are entitled to. Money Saving Expert points out that it is a common misconception that benefits are only available if you are out of work, but even some families with an income of £50,000 or more can qualify for help. With the cost of living rising, it’s more important than ever to know what you’re entitled to.
